It’s official. A company linked to the billionaire Weston family is in the online weed business.
That’s because Health Canada’s website has been updated to reveal that Shoppers Drug Mart has a federal licence to sell medical cannabis over the Internet.
The Straight previously reported in September that it had received a licence through its parent company, Loblaw Companies Limited.
According to Health Canada, the retailer is permitted to register patients who want to buy plants, seeds, dried cannabis, fresh cannabis, and cannabis oils.
It hasn’t begun selling weed yet, but it has set up a website promising that it’s a ‘trusted source for convenient, online purchase of medical cannabis’.
Shoppers Drug Mart is under the umbrella of Loblaw, of which Galen Weston Jr. is chairman, executive CEO, and president.
Weston is well known to Canadians for his appearances in TV and radio advertisements peddling his company’s President’s Choice brand of products.
Forbes magazine has listed the Weston family’s net worth at $8.2 billion, as of December 9.
