The Mounties have executed a search warrant on a holistic-healing shop in Richmond believed to be selling cannabis.
According to an RCMP news release, organized crime unit officers entered WeeMedical Wellness Center at 3 p.m. on Tuesday (January 24).
It was operating without a business licence at 8050 Anderson Road, not far from the intersection of No. 3 Road and Granville Avenue.
“When Richmond RCMP officers arrived, the element of surprise proved unnecessary,’ Cpl. Dennis Hwang said in the release. ‘The storefront staff appeared preoccupied and our presence was scarcely noticed.”
The Mounties took away 180 small bags, which they suspect were full of marijuana.
In addition, baked goods and other edibles were seized.
The federal Liberals have promised to bring in legislation this spring to legalize marijuana.
In the meantime, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says marijuana continues to be illegal for those not registered as patients with Health Canada.
Last August, Delta obtained a permanent injunction against a WeeMedical Dispensary Society on 120 Street.
This came after municipal officials twice refused the organization’s request for a business licence.
In that case, a director of the society, May Joan Liu, told the B.C. Supreme Court that she was trying to push the legislative agenda forward to allow retail marijuana dispensaries.
Justice Shelley Fitzpatrick pointed out in her ruling that WeeMedical was required to obey the laws in relation to medical marijuana.
WeeMedical operates dispensaries in several other B.C. communities.
