Health Canada has unveiled its latest measure to monitor the pot market.
A new cannabis tracking system will be introduced to ensure that legal cannabis doesn’t end up in the illegal market.
According to the government, it will also prevent illegal weed from being sold through legal means.
‘We have been clear about our objective of keeping profits out of the hands of criminals and organized crime,’ Border Security and Organized Crime Reduction Minister Bill Blair said in a news release.

He’s also promised ‘routine and unannounced inspections and rigorous personnel and physical security requirements’.
The news release stated that no personal information about individual consumers will be gathered through the new system.
Rather, it will ‘only collect data that is necessary for Health Canada to track cannabis at a national level’.
The system will be used by organizations that hold a federal licence to cultivate and process cannabis, as well as by provinces and territories that will oversee the sale of weed.
It builds on an existing approach used to track the distribution of medical cannabis.
